Mold is a fungus found throughout the world, especially in temperate to tropical climates. Sometimes referred to as mildew, mold feeds on moisture and grows anyplace that is damp or where there is decaying matter present. It is most often characterized by green, blue, or black patches or discolorations on the walls and/or ceilings in and around your home or workplace.

Mold is introduced into our environments by people and animals. Mold spores can cling onto clothing, shoes, hair, animal fur, etc. Airborne mold spores enter into our environments through windows and doorways as well as through ventilation systems, air conditioning ducts, heating systems, etc. Mold is often the result of water intrusion left unattended and is a very common occurrence in the wake of a sever storm or hurricane.

Mold is most likely to grow in any damp and dark area (such as an attic). Mold will flourish anywhere there is a problem of water intrusion, such as with a leaky roof, leaks in the ceiling and/or wall, moist carpet, leaky pipes, or water intrusion behind and on wallpaper, wallboard, and all kinds of wood products. Toxic mold is a general term used to describe several types of mold, including: Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Fusarium, Acremonium, Alternaria, and Chaetomium. Another form of toxic mold is black mold (also known as Stachybotrys Chartarum). Black mold produces a toxin (mycotoxin) which can be very dangerous for humans and animals. Black mold can grow throughout your home or office. Black mold can grow in building materials such as wood, paper, fiberboard, etc. Toxic mold can cause a number of health problems including upper respiratory illness, constant fatigue, loss of memory, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, breathing problems, and depression.
